This study describes the development of high-performance fabrics for military applications, aiming to create a material that integrates the traditional requirements (such as water penetration resistance, good breathability and high mechanical performances) with specific requirements in terms of silencing properties, sustainability, lightweight and compactness. These new generation textiles were made using 100% recycled nylon yarns; various fabric constructions and weaving techniques were explored to enhance the fabric's inherent quietness. The fabrics were laminated using hot melt technology, optimizing the adhesive type and processing parameters to improve fabric noise reduction. Three different configurations were finally developed: a twill, an elastic ripstop and a firm ripstop were laminated to a polyurethane membrane, 100% PTFE-free and polyester backing. Sound power level test showed a reduction of more than 4 decibels compared to traditional fabrics, while all the other performance tests showed results comparable to those achieved with PTFE membranes.
