Avantium is an innovation-driven company dedicated to developing and commercializing breakthrough technologies for the production of chemicals from renewable sources and circular plastic materials used for a variety of consumer products. Avantium’s lead product is “Releaf” (biobased Polyethylene Furanoate polymer – PEF), a novel, 100% plant-based, and recyclable polyester with a powerful combination of environmental and performance features. Avantium has recently built a commercial scale FDCA production facility to enable large scale introduction of PEF into textile industry. Excellent processability of PEF to continuous yarns and staple fibers using existing PET processing equipment opens the doors to expend the applications throughout textile industry. The conversion of PEF yarns & fibers to fabrics for several application i.e. upholstery, nonwoven, home textiles, apparel along with dyeing and finishing has been successfully demonstrated on existing assets. This has shown the potential to establish Avantium’s Releaf as a sustainable alternative in the textile industry. The presentation summaries the unique features and sustainability aspects of PEF polymer and its potential in the textile industry as well as future perspectives for the upscaling of PEF-based textile production.
