The topic of sustainable raw materials is also becoming increasingly important in the fiber industry. Thermoplastic fibers based on petrol based polymers are state of the art and can be found in many different areas of application in the carpet industry. The fiber market and consumers are demanding more and more sustainable products, but their performance should be in no way inferior to classic petrol-based plastics. That is exactly the challenge facing fiber producers - to define the development of bio-based or recycled fibers and their optimal areas of application (based on raw materials and properties) in close collaboration with the carpet industry.

One example for sustainable staple fibers are Polyamide 6.10 (PA 6.10) coarse staple fibers that represent a promising bio-based alternative to conventional Polyamide 6 (PA6) in the carpet industry. With a significant bio-based content, PA610 contributes to reducing the carbon footprint and promotes sustainable material cycles. Additionally, PA610 exhibits improved water absorption, which reduces static charge and enhances user comfort. Another key advantage is its higher dimensional stability, resulting in more durable carpet structures with improved resilience. IFG Asota GmbH has been conducting extensive research on the development of PA610 fibers for several years and is working closely with a renowned carpet manufacturer. The goal of this collaboration is to establish a high-performance and sustainable fiber solution for the carpet market. Initial application tests have demonstrated that PA610 fibers offer clear advantages over PA6 in both processing and end-use performance. This lecture presents the latest developments in PA610 coarse staple fiber technology and other new raw materials and highlights its technological and ecological benefits. Furthermore, the results of the collaboration between IFG Asota and the carpet manufacturer will be discussed to showcase the potential of this innovative material solution for the carpet industry.
