While elastane is often considered an obstacle to textile recycling, The LYCRA Company and Recyc’Elit have shown that complete circularity of PES/LYCRA products is a viable and desirable route. Starting from finished PES/LYCRA fabrics, Recyc’Elit differenciating technology was able to selectively depolymerize PES into monomers and recover high quality elastane component for being recycled back into elastane fiber by The LYCRA Company. This pilot scale project opens new scenarios as far as textile recycling and addresses upcoming EU regulations requirements.

With the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles becoming a reality, the need for advanced and demonstrated technologies to manage end of life garments is one of the top priorities of the textile industry. The LYCRA Company and Recyc’Elit have collaborated on a closed-loop project to recycle polyester and elastane blended fabrics. This work reports our progress from lab to pilot scale, demonstrating the ability to separate elastane from polyester in finished fabrics: Recyc’Elit’s differenciating technology selectively depolymerizes polyester into monomers for repolymerization into fiber grade polymer. The high quality recovered elastane is blended with virgin material to create recycled LYCRA® fiber, maintaining key performance attributes. The circularity of blended fabrics has been confirmed, showing that LYCRA(r) fiber in end-of-life garments could be seen as an opportunity rather than an obstacle.
