In the face of the climate crisis textiles producers are looking for high quality sustainable textile material alternatives. Chiengora, or dog wool, is a natural, renewable and biodegradable fiber derived from the brushed-out undercoat of double-coated dogs. Though typically chiengora is considered waste and discarded, the use of it in the textile industry can promote sustainability by repurposing a natural resource that would otherwise go to waste.

Chiengora, or dog wool, is a natural fiber derived from the brushed-out undercoat of double-coated dogs. As a by-product of routine grooming, chiengora is typically considered waste and usually discarded in plastic bags in trash bins, ultimately ending up in landfills and contributing to environmental pollution. Unlike traditional wool producing animals, such as sheep, cashmere goats or alpacas, dogs are not bred for fiber production, making chiengora an unutilized natural, renewable and biodegradable resource for sustainable textile applications. Moreover, the use of chiengora as an alternative to traditional wool fibers has the potential to reduce environmental impact and lower carbon emissions. As chiengora is about 80% warmer than sheep wool and has thermal insulation properties, so it is ideal for outerwear and home textiles. Using it in the textile industry can promote sustainability by repurposing a natural resource that would otherwise go to waste. Moreover, chiengora contains no lanolin; this eliminates the need for intensive washing and reduces water and detergent consumption, thereby enhancing its sustainability. With around 90 million dogs in the EU and 900 million worldwide, chiengora has the potential to be a widely available natural and renewable fiber source. Chiengora can positively influence the textile industry as it can be used in knitting, weaving, and felting with potential scalability for industrial applications.
