40% of plastic waste is from packaging. The world creates 141 million tonnes of plastic packaging a year A big problem for apparel producing brands as an estimated 90 billion garments are packaged in individual polybags The fashion industry is actively seeking new sustainable materials in order to reduce its significant social and environmental impact.

Christopher Killay (Limu- Packaging)
Limu Packaging was founded to develop and manufacture a true mass-market polyethylene (PE) bag alternative, using globally abundant and carbon-neutral algae, also known as seaweed. Limu Packaging has developed a patented poly-film-making technology using a regenerated alginate based formula derived from processing compounds from various species of brown seaweed,. The Company’s innovative new Limu Bags are made on proprietary machinery that enhances seaweed-based film to mimic the physical and optical characteristics of PE film yet is fully biodegradable. Seaweed is extraordinarily fast growing, requiring no land, no water, no energy, and no fertilizer Over 30 million tons of seaweed is harvested annualy thus providing a highly abundant potential source of base material Dr. Andrea Bonilla (co-founder of Limu-Packaging) is also CEO of BioPlaster Research, an R&D company that specializes in biodegradable advanced materials. BioPlaster through science and technology, was born to face the problems associated with the large amount of sargassum seaweed that overwhelms costal communities in the Caribbean. She has successfully been able to process alginate and cellulose from sargassum and outlined a means to do this cost effectively on a production scale. Thus developing a commerical use for the invasive sargassum problem In addition, Dr. Bonilla’s lab relies on the use of nanotechnology and biotechnology to develop replacements for other petroleum-based plastics for several applications such as Styrofoam in shock absorbing packaging and thermoplastics Limu-Packaging will beging supplying the film and bags globally in 2025
