Aerogel nonwoven – A new highperformance insulator for energy-efficient refurbishments

To reach the targeted climate goals, approx. 75 % of all buildings in Europe need to be renovated to better thermal insulation standards. Aerogels can be one solution to achieve these goals.

Aerogels are sponge like materials with nanometer sized pores. Therefore, aerogels yield very low thermal conductivities and are excellent thermal insulation materials. Aerogels are approx. 20-50% better in comparison to available materials on the market. Usually, aerogels are made as monolithic boards, which is a time consuming and resource intensive process. ITA developed the capability to spin aerogels as fibers. In this case the fiber cross section contains the aerogel typical pore structure. This approach reduces the overall process complexity, resource consumption and also allows the usage of existing textile processing machines. The aerogel fibers then can be tailored to the specific needs of the application. E.g. by the usage of blow molding to create 3D molded fiber products, where the density can be tailored to the local heat flow.
