ScPLA fibers for reinforcement of circular monomaterial composites

Stereocomplex (sc)PLA fibers have high potential in expanding the applications of PLA-based materials into the technical field. The high thermal resilience of the scPLA crystals even enables the incorporation into a PLA matrix for realization of innovative monomaterial composites, which have great advantages in the recycling process.

The lecture presents the recent research at Fraunhofer IAP in the field of scPLA fibers, produced by melt spinning and subsequent posttreatment. The achieved tensile fiber properties, which are close to the range of technical PET fibers, allow an optimistic forecast for the ongoing developments of PLA-based monomaterial composites reinforced by scPLA fibers. Further, the presentation covers the developments in the field of scPLA fiber-based monomaterial composites and the realized production of recycled scPLA fibers by application of thermomechanical recycling approach.
