Melt-spun fibres based on shape memory polymers can memorize a particular shape and transform into it once activated by one of various possible triggers. These fibres possess high potential in a variety of textile applications. They allow for a substantial strain of up to 800% and have shorter programming and recovery durations compared to conventional shape memory alloys. This economic advantage presents the opportunity to mass-produce goods containing shape memory polymers for sustainable and individual consumer applications in the future. However, their development is complex, and their properties have to be adapted to their respective applications. This presentation addresses the potential applications and new opportunities created by using shape memory fibres in 4D textiles and the challenges in their development. An overview of the state of the art and results obtained at the Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University will be used to analyse potential applications in technical textiles along with sportswear and apparel.
