In France, recycling in the textile sector is a real challenge involving more and more technical innovation. The presentation will highlight an innovative project which is carried out by IFTH consisting in recycling by the thermomechanical way, on closed loop, a polypropylene technical textile .
The first stage of this project focuses on the polypropylene textile waste shredding. This step is one of the most important step which allows to determine a favourable waste geometry for their introduction in the extrusion process. Different processes to achieve the more suitable way that ensure materials processability in the next thermal transformation steps will be presented and their strengths and weaknesses described.
The second stage of this study focuses on the transformation of recycled raw material. This step shows processes to get monofilament and multifilament yarns by melt extrusion process from 100% recycled wastes. The mechanical properties of the prototyped yarns are particularly studied to reach mechanical specifications adapted to textile processes. These yarns are then successfully weaved and knitted in order to produce textiles from 100% recycled wastes on closed loop.
